The Missing Cardinal

“The Missing Cardinal” was painted after a visit to the NC Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill. I like to paint the holes in gardens — sometimes I see these places as a refuge or nest, a cozy place to hide. Other times they feel more menacing, like a portal into a place I’d rather not go. When I enlarged this photo to use it as a paint reference, I noticed a cardinal hiding in a shadow in the center of the “hole.” Though he didn’t make it into my painting, I think of him when I look at this piece!
